Facilities for Passengers with Disability

New and Improved Facilities Mean Better Service for All Our Customers

We are striving to improve access and facilities for all our passengers - not only those registered as disabled, but the elderly, people travelling with babies or small children, and those who need step-free access. We are making improvements to many of our existing stations, and all our future lines will incorporate easy access facilities. Both the Tung Chung Line (TCL) and Airport Express stations are accessible to passengers with a disability.

Facilities for Visually Impaired Passengers

• TACTILE GUIDE PATHS have been installed at all stations.
• MODIFICATION OF OBSTRUCTIONS such as litter bins, payphones and fare maps has been carried out to make them easily detectable to cane users.
• AUDIBLE DEVICES have been installed at all five lines: Kwun Tong Line (KTL), Tsuen Wan Line (TWL) Island Line (ISL), Tung Chung Line (TCL) and Airport Express (AEL) stations to help passengers locate escalators at platform level. The audible device at all overhead stations turn off after 21:00 to avoid causing a nuisance to nearby residents.
• TACTILE SIGNAGE is being developed and may be introduced at a later stage.
• BRAILLE ROUTE MAPS which give passengers with visual impairments more confidence in using the MTR system were first issued in Jan 97, and are currently being updated.
• BRAILLE PLATES have been added onto Octopus Add Value Machines at all 44 stations.

Facilities for Hearing Impaired Passengers

• AUDIO INDUCTION LOOPS to assist hearing aid users have already been installed at Pacific Century Cyber Works (PCCW) payphones in all lines and Customer Service Centres of KTL, TWL and ISL stations.
• COMMUNICATION CARDS to facilitate communication between staff and passengers are available at all Customer Service Centres of the KTL, TWL and ISL Stations.
• PASSENGER INFORMATION DISPLAY SYSTEMS have been installed at all entrances of underground stations to give timely notice of incidents. Information displays at concourses and platforms have been provided in all stations.
• FLASHING SYSTEM MAP/ACTIVE LINE DIAGRAMS to show the location and direction of the train have been provided. Flashing system maps have been provided in the modernised trains and TCL trains. Active line diagrams have been installed in the Airport Express trains.
• INFOPANELS which display messages have been installed in all modernised trains.

Ex-mentally Ill Passengers

• An orientation training session for the ex-mentally ill passengers using our system was held between April and September 1997 with New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.

Facilities for Mobility Handicapped Passengers

• MULTI-USE PARKING SPACES have been provided in Tung Chung Line and Airport Express trains. For KTL, TWL and ISL trains, all cars have been provided a multi-use space in the modernization trains.
• BI-DIRECTIONAL WIDE GATES that allow wheelchair users and passengers with baby prams to pass through the paid areas without staff assistance have been provided at all stations concourse.
